"Picasso, Prostitution, and His Favorite Procuress," by Salus Carol, author of the recent book book "Picasso and Celestina: The Artist’s Vision of the Procuress,"
Picasso’s involvement in the lives of prostitutes, when closely examined, tells us much about his vitality and interests at various points in his 92 years. Early works of street walkers, courtesans, and brothels in Madrid and Barcelona are discussed . Religious overtones in his paintings of diseased prostitutes at St. Lazare prison hospital and his famous Celestina portrait, a parody of El Greco’s Virgin, raise important issues. In his final years, ornamental prostitutes and Celestina appear frequently as he comes to grips with the anxieties of impotency, aging, and facing death.
Exhibit "500 years of images of the procuress Celestina".
Multimedia exhibit of images related to the book Celestina (1499) and its depiction of the world of prostitution
